he dome of Al-Muhajirin Mosque in Mindiptana, Boven Digoel regency, Papua, collapsed early on Monday, following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake centered in Papua New Guinea, around 266 kilometers from the regency.
“The mosque’s dome collapsed and 50 percent of the building was damaged. Two main pillars of the mosque were damaged and its walls were cracked. It is estimated that the earthquake caused Rp 500 million [US$35,000] in losses,” Boven Digoel Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Yohanis Apri Budi Riyanto told The Jakarta Post.
As a result of the damage, Apri said religious activities were moved to the Old Mosque.
The earthquake also damaged five houses in Kampung Kamka, Mindiptana district. “Although the earthquake destroyed some residential houses, thank God there were no fatalities in the incident,” said Apri.
The earthquake was also felt by residents in other areas. According to authorities, strong shocks were felt in Tanah Merah, Wamena and Merauke while Jayapura was hit with lighter shocks.
