irefighters and personnel from the Environment and Forestry Ministry have been looking for crocodiles in the Angke River, near Jl. Latumeten, West Jakarta, following crocodile sightings on Wednesday morning.
The personnel searched for the crocodiles using inflatable boats at 3:30 p.m., tribunnews.com reported on Wednesday.
Public Facility Maintenance Agency (PPSU) personnel said they had spotted two crocodiles in the river.
PPSU worker, Abdi, stated he spotted the crocodiles in May.
“While I was [cleaning the river], I saw two crocodiles sunbathing near the [river's embankment],” Abdi said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.
Abdi said he first thought the crocodiles were big lizards, as he had seen many lizards in the river.
However, he was then sure that they were crocodiles after looking at them closely.
Another PPSU officer, Amin, said he also saw two crocodiles swimming in the river in May.
The crocodiles were not big, he said.
However, Amin did not report the sighting, as according to other PPSU workers, crocodiles were often seen in the river.
West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency official Trimarjono said he had received reports on crocodile sighting since Tuesday.
However, as the agency did not have special equipment to catch them, it was coordinating with other agencies to catch the crocodiles, he said.
On June 15, a crocodile was seen at Pondok Dayung, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.
Last week, a crocodile was seen near the East Flood Canal in Cilincing, North Jakarta.
It is unclear if the crocodile was the same as the one spotted in Tanjung Priok. (cal)
