Manhole covers along the Mampang-Kuningan underpass in South Jakarta were reportedly stolen for the third time within two months.
Jakarta’s Bina Marga road agency acting head, Heru Suwondo, said the incident took place on Wednesday, right after Idul Adha prayers.
“That’s right. At least two manhole covers were stolen,” he said as quoted by kompas.com. “The covers had been welded, but somehow the culprits still managed to take them off.”
While the suspects have yet to be caught, Heru added, the uncovered holes had been covered with road signs to prevent traffic accidents.
Since earlier incidents in June, the city administration had attempted to prevent similar incident from occurring again by installing 12 CCTV cameras along the underpass.
“But the cameras haven’t been connected to the server,” Heru said, hence the agency was experiencing difficulties in probing the latest incident.
The agency has considered permanently welding manhole covers along the underpass so that people would not be able to remove them easily. (vla)
