fter a 10-year hiatus, the 2019 Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) returns to North Sumatra on Saturday and Sunday, offering a total of 50 special stages (SS) in the Rally of Medan.
Governor Edy Rahmayadi expressed hope the event would boost the region’s tourism.
"We have a target to attract 1 million tourists a year. The event should boost tourism. Rally racing requires team work, which brings many people here, and an international championship like this will attract attention, domestically and internationally," Edy told the press at Deliserdang Museum in Lubuk Pakam, North Sumatra, on Friday.
The governor said if the APRC event went well it could lead to the province hosting a World Rally Championship race in 2020, which would promote the province to an even greater degree.
A total of 63 drivers are taking part in the Rally of Medan, with the largest share coming from North Sumatra with 26 drivers, followed by Jakarta with 17. The remaining participants come from South Kalimantan, South Sumatra, West Java, East Java and Bali, with Italian driver Fabio Friziero also taking part.
National rally drivers Ryan Nirwan, Subhan Aksa and H Rihan Variza are also participating.
