hilippine President Rodrigo Duterte's daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio, on Saturday filed her candidacy for vice president for the May presidential election, after months of speculation that she would run for president.
But local media reported that Duterte himself, who in October announced his retirement from politics, may run for vice president by Monday, the deadline for the parties to change candidates whom they fielded during the official filing period last month, leaving the possibility of a battle between father and daughter.
Duterte-Carpio, 43-year-old mayor of Davao City, formalized her bid as the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, an opposition party once led by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, substituted her for a virtually unknown vice presidential candidate.
Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, the party led by Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son and namesake of the former dictator, later in the day said in a statement that it endorsed Duterto-Carpio as Marcos' running mate in the May 2022 presidential election.
Earlier this week, Duterte-Carpio withdrew from the Davao mayoral election, quit her regional party and joined the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats.
However, it is still uncertain if the team of Marcos and Duterte-Carpio can lead in a strong position as the report by local broadcaster ABS-CBN quoted Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin Andanar as saying that Duterte plans to return to the election commission office on Monday to file his candidacy for vice president.
It is still unknown if Duterte will run for vice president from the ruling PDP-Laban party or another party.
