The President's office has confirmed that it had selected eight figures to be appointed as interim regional leaders as the countdown begins to the official 2024 campaign season.
resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has appointed a number of officials from within his administration to replace regional leaders whose terms are ending in the coming months, including potential election contenders Ganjar Pranowo of Central Java and Ridwan Kamil of West Java.
The 10 names to be appointed interim governors were decided in a final meeting with the assessment team, said Ali Mochtar Ngabalin, lead expert staffer at the Executive Office of the President (KSP).
“Yes it is true. It was decided by the President yesterday on Thursday in a meeting with the assessment team,” Ngabalin confirmed on Friday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
He added that the Home Ministry was ready swear in the interim regional heads on behalf of Jokowi “at a moment’s notice”.
Among the appointees with the highest profiles is Bey Machmudin, the Presidential Secretariat’s protocol, press and media deputy, who will temporarily assume the West Java governorship after Golkar Party politician Ridwan’s five-year term ends on Sept. 5.
Ridwan, a Sundanese native like Bey, is seen as a highly likely vice presidential contender for his work in the province and other accolades. He previously told The Jakarta Post he was open to running for reelection as West Java governor.
“Good luck in your new duties, Kang Bey,” the social media-savvy politician posted on Instagram, addressing his successor using a Sundanese honorific.
