acebook will allow group administrators to charge for exclusive memberships, ranging from US$4.99 to $29.99 a month, later this year.

The Verge reported that certain groups, such as ones focusing on parenting and cooking, will be the first to get the new feature during its initial trial period.

Free-to-access groups will still be available, but administrators will be able to charge for subgroups. For example, blogger Sarah Mueller, who runs Declutter My Home, will be starting an Organize My Home group that costs $14.99 a month.

“Subscription groups align with the experience that we made available to support video creators earlier this year, and is part of our overall approach to helping creators and leaders to financially support the work they do to engage their fans and communities,” said Facebook in a blog post announcing the new feature.

In the same blog post, Organize My Home’s Mueller writes, “With the new subscription group, I will be able to provide this new community with more interactive ways to having an organized home like mini-projects, group challenges, trainings, and live Q&A, while still keeping the original group as a robust community for getting free advice and motivation.”

As it currently stands, Facebook will not be receiving a cut of the charges, but on its mobile apps, Apple and Google will be taking a percentage of user subscriptions fees, as per usual App Store and Play Store policies. (sul/wng)
