The new live-action ‘Mulan’ trailer brings honor to us all Liu Yifei in 'Mulan.' (Disney/File)

e’ve finally got a first look at Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of animated classic Mulan, and we’re really happy with the way it’s turning out.

If you’re a fan of the original Mulan (the Disney version, not the actual original Chinese folktale), then there will be a lot to love about this trailer. Liu Yifei at least, looks the part as Mulan, the filial daughter who takes her father’s place in China’s army.

Many of the important scenes you’d remember from the animated feature are there – the matchmaking sequence, the training camp, the avalanche, even a reference to one of the songs…. The only thing missing is Mushu and his little lucky cricket (whom, sadly, won’t be making an appearance).

Directed by acclaimed New Zealand director Niko Caro (Whale Rider), the film is based on the classic 1998 animated film, which is in turn, based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. The film also stars Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li.

To be honest, if it wasn’t for the words ‘Disney’ and ‘Mulan’ all over the trailer, you wouldn’t have guessed it’s a remake of the animated feature at all.

Despite reports that the original songs will not be part of the movie (there will only be included as instrumentals), this live-action version of Mulan looks like a much more serious and epic remake compared to the original. This, coupled with recent news that the new Little Mermaid will be played by Halle Bailey, could signal a major shift in Disney’s direction for their live action remakes.

The recent remakes, from Beauty And The Beast to the recent Aladdin, have been criticized for being almost scene for scene remakes of the original animated features, but Mulan could change things for the better. At the very least, we hope that it will bring honor to us all.

Your new trailer definitely hits the target, Mulan.
