P

resident Prabowo Subianto has instructed his administration to accelerate the rollout of the free nutritious meals program to reach 20 million people before the country’s 80th independence day on Aug. 17.

Speaking at a National Awakening Party (PKB) event in Jakarta on Wednesday night, Prabowo said his flagship program, which targets schoolchildren and pregnant women, had reached 6.7 million schoolchildren as of this month. The government aims to feed over 82 million mouths by the end of the year.

The President said officials in charge of the program believed they could reach 20 million people by the end of August, but he asked for it to be accelerated.

“I asked [the officials] to think of the ways we can speed this up before the end of August, [...] and then they reported that it might be possible to hit our goals before Aug. 17,” Prabowo said during the event, Antara reported.

Prabowo, however, noted that the food quality standards remain crucial to maintain, saying that the process also “takes time”.

The program, one of Prabowo’s election promises, has been marred with food safety concerns since it kicked off at the start of the year, with a rising number of cases of food poisoning caused by the meals in various parts of the country.
