A memoir of Indonesian soccer legend Roland Hermanus Pattinasarany, known as Ronny Pattinasarany, was released Friday, four months after the death of the country's star.

Ronny, who was the national team skipper during his heyday in the 1980s, died on Sept. 18, 2008, aged 56. He had suffered from pancreatic cancer and had received medical treatment at the Modern Hospital in Guangzhou, China.

The 207-page memoir, which was written by Andreas J. Waskita, revealed the life and achievements of Ronny as a soccer player and as a religious person who was a family man.

"A true fighter," as his first son, Benny Pattinasanary, said in the book. Benny and second son Yerry had been drug addicts and Ronny fought hard to help them cope with the addiction back in 1999. The third child in the family, daughter Cita, designed the book cover for Ronny's memoir.

Ronny's wife, Stella Pattinasarany, acknowledged that she was relieved when the book about her inspirational husband was finally published.

"Since the beginning of the book-writing in 2006, I already felt that Ronny wanted this book, about his journey in soccer, to be published. I believe he wanted to spread his determination in life to the public through his memoirs," Stella said during the book launch at the residence of oil tycoon Arifin Panigoro in Jakarta.

Born in Makassar on Feb. 9, 1949, Ronny started his career as a member of the PSM Makassar junior team soccer club in 1966.

Two years later, he was listed in the senior team. In 1971, he joined the national junior team and a year later moved to the national senior team where he played from 1979 to 1984.

He retired from soccer in 1982 and began his career as a coach at several clubs, including Persiba in Balikpapan, Persita in Tangerang, Petrokimia Putra and SSB.

Ronny received, among others, the National Best Sportsman Award given by the Indonesian Sports Journalists in 1974 and 1981, and The Best Player of the Asian All Stars in 1982.

He was also a columnist for Kompas daily and a commentator on RCTI.
