P

olitics in Indonesia seems to be mainly about corruption these days and our daily news is turning into a long-running fable about two animals - the gecko and the crocodile. It seems I can't even escape when I go for my early morning walk! You see, I have the doubtful honor of having one of the crocodiles as a neighbor - none other than the infamous Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji himself.

Susno is, of course, the notorious former cop who last year lost his powerful position as chief of the National Police Criminal Investigation Department. For months, he's hogged the headlines because of his alleged involvement in several high-caliber corruption cases investigated by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). (By Julia Suryakusuma /Jakarta)

Your comments:

Maybe Susno has been studying the US' justice system. There, whenever someone is arrested for a crime, they are offered what is known as a plea bargain.

That is to say, they will receive a reduced sentence if they avoid the expense of a trial and plead guilty to the charge.

It is explained to them that this reduction could be further reduced or the case can be dropped completely if they name other people involved in the same crime.

Evidence is not important in the US as, if the accused will stand up in court and accuse the others, these accusations will be accepted by the court as fact. This is known as "hearsay evidence". One has to understand the reason behind all this.

The local District Attorney is not interested in justice or truth but rather in the number of convictions that he can obtain and thus, be able to claim a high percentage and convince the public that he is fighting crime, so they will continue to support and elect him.

Perhaps Susno hopes that Indonesia can learn something from the American system.

What a stupid generalization of the American justice system. "Evidence is not important". What? Sheldon has obviously watched too many batman movies instead of doing real research, and in the process, misinformed the public.

Next time you're in the states, try to bribe a cop or a judge and see where you end up, or maybe then you can submit a plea bargain and get a reduced sentence. Not. For the Post readers who dislike seeing lies in print, Google "American justice system" and read.

Divine cigarettes used to treat cancer -- May 19, p. 21

Many in the medical field might raise an eyebrow upon hearing that cigarette smoke can be good for one's health, given the numerous findings relating tobacco use to an increase in the risk of cancer. Yet an Indonesian nanochemistry scientist is treating thousands of cancer patients in her clinic with modified cigarettes.

Seventy-one-year-old Greta Zahar, who holds a PhD in nanochemistry from the Bandung-based University of Padjadjaran, has been researching and developing specially treated cigarettes and cigarette filters, which she dubs the Divine Cigarette and Divine Filter, for more than a decade.

She developed a detoxification process called balur (smear) treatment, which uses smoke from Divine Cigarettes as a conduit to capture and extract poisonous metal such as mercury from the body - a process she believes can be beneficial in treating cancer and several other diseases. Don't Smoke, avoid secondary smoke, and please, no medical evidence equals quackery, if she had found a cure for caner she would be a multi billionaire.

Divine cigarettes a cure for cancer eh? What tosh! Divinity and cigarettes are two of the deadliest cancers affecting Indonesia today.

I decided to do this treatment because I heard and spoke to people who had positive results.

At the beginning of the treatment I could barely walk 10 paces and now I can easily walk four kilometers.

Sorry, there are no tobacco industry lobbyists involved. If I could go back in time would I make the same choice? You bet!

So this "scientist" thinks it is "a waste of time" for her dubious claims to be verified by peer-review, does she? What utter nonsense.

She is a charlatan and a quack exploiting the hopes and dreams of people who are ill.
