Artistic encounters in Singapore

S

ingapore has long established itself as the gateway to Asian and Southeast Asian art, what with two of the world’s biggest auction houses – Christie’s and Sotheby’s — cozily making a home there and regularly attracting international bidders to find their own artistic treasure within the city-state.

Art lovers who aren’t too keen on the thrills of the auction floor, however, need not worry in Singapore. The island is also home to numerous art galleries that should be able to cater to the needs of enthusiasts, collectors and investors alike.

This month like any other, many such galleries are buzzing with series of exhibitions embracing both the traditional and contemporary as well as all things exquisite and/or quirky.

Nevertheless, there’s something undoubtedly special about the Singapore art scene in November. For years now, events honoring the late Andy Warhol have sprung up at exactly this time of the year, with many of the legendary artist’s works exhibited across the island.

Warhol makes a return in 2010 with two exhibitions at the Collectors Contemporary and the Pop and Contemporary Fine Art gallery, situated on Jalan Kilang Barat and at Orchard’s Palais Renaissance respectively.

The first exhibition, “Andy Warhol: The Uniques”, showcases some of Warhol’s finest distinctive and rare works starting tomorrow evening to repeat daily until Dec. 4.

The latter, titled “Andy Warhol’s 15 Minutes” in Singapore Exhibition, aims to give the Pop Art founder another 15 minutes of fame as a troubled genius “who has inspired thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, in their pursuit of art”.

15 Minutes takes place between Nov. 6 and 27, 2010, with all pieces from the exhibition available for sale. Visit popandcontemporaryart.com for more information.

For something equally artistic yet with a hint of the Australian exotica, the Australasian Arts Projects on Tanglin Road will be exhibiting some 60 collectable pieces produced by indigenous artists from central, western and eastern Australian deserts.

“Desert Icons unfolds” on Nov. 2 and will last until Nov. 16 — don’t miss out!

The next event in our Singapore agenda this month may prove a novel idea for the aspiring art investor (or any kind of investor for that matter).

Eduwealth (eduwealth.com) is running another series of Personal Finance Camp for Kids and Teens at the Spring Singapore headquarters in Bukit Merah, the first legs of which will happen on Nov. 6, 13 and 20 exclusively for kids between 9 and 12 years old.

Using the institution’s original Praxis Financial Board game, your little ones will learn hands-on the crucial elements of budgeting, money management basics, investing, insurance planning, retirement planning and understanding the stock market.

Additional learning will be given to participants via interactive activities and watching videos. The camp runs half-day for kids and a full day for teens between 14 and 16 years old (scheduled for Nov. 20).

Sign up on Eduwealth’s website to receive
special rates for joining the camp.
