The Arab League said Wednesday that Washington had overstepped its bounds by saying Syrian President Bashar Assad had lost the legitimacy to lead his country.
Speaking to reporters in Damascus, Arab League Chief Nabil Elaraby said Assad assured him that “Syria has entered a new era and is now moving on the road of a genuine reform.”
Syria came under withering international criticism Tuesday as the White House said Assad has “lost legitimacy” and the UN Security Council condemned attacks on the US and French embassies in Damascus.
It was a sharp escalation in pressure on Assad and a sign that the Obama administration could be moving closer to calling for regime change in Syria over the violent crackdown on a four-month-old uprising. Previously, the US’ position on Assad was that he should lead a transition to democracy or leave.
Your comments:
Who exactly does the Arab League represent? They represent the dictators, autocrats and royal households that want to remain in power, so of course they would ask the US and others to stop interfering in Syria’s affairs.
They trod a very fine line when they asked for help in Libya, belatedly realizing that the same could happen in their own countries.
The people of Syria (similar to most people in the world) want a voice, they want to be heard and they want freedom from tyranny. The world should get involved, very involved to give our brothers and sisters the same liberties that many of us take for granted.

The Arab League is a debating club. The Arabs should dissolve this organization. It is a really useless organization.

Those Arabs deserve to be free, no one can deny that.

The core values and beliefs of democracy are human rights and rule of law, rights of individuals and the sharing of common ideals, which are all too often denied in the Arab world.
The new era of cooperation is required to ensure growth and stability of the global economy’s prosperity and as revolution races through out the Middle East, the entire world has a stake in the aspirations of the current generation to determine its destiny.
The Arab world is adapting to new circumstances to unleash the full potential of individuals but sadly some of the old guards refuse to embrace this.
We do this thing because we believe it is not simply the right of these nations but the right of their citizens.
These are universal rights: The choice of interests or ideals. Repression only gives false promise
of stability.

The Arab League should protect and defend the Arab worlds and, of course, all Muslims around
the globe!

One has to understand that the US is no longer run by the people as claimed but rather by corporations.
Their long range goals are world domination and military bases in all parts of the world to support this.

Arab League, what an absurd name from another epoch, when the world was divided in “races”.
Can you imagine an “Aryan”, “Hebrew”, “Latino”, “Chinese” or “Melanesian League” today? The rest would surely cry racism!
Interestingly, if their own people are killed by the thousands by their respective government, they are silent.
But if an “infidel” nation wants to defend those attacked, the League cries wolf. It is so sad.
