UPANG: State electricity company PT PLN will replace around 10,000 billing meters that are more than 20 years old for consumers in several areas in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) including Timor Island, Sumba and Flores.
“For the first phase this month, as many as 1,731 units will be replaced,” Paul Bolla, the company’s spokesperson, said on Friday.
“No fee will be charged for the replacement,” he said.
He said the replacement was necessary to reduce the power load due to damaged meters. “Ideally, a meter must be replaced after 15 years.”
According to company’s data, NTT PLN has 67,000 pre-paid customers, 13,500 of whom live in western Flores, 14,000 in eastern Flores, 12,000 in Kupang and the rest scattered throughout Sumba, Rote and Alor.
Paul said pre-paid meters gave customers an advantage, as power use could be controlled and the customers did not need to fear having their connections terminated due to late payment.
