AKARTA: State airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) will build a new terminal at Supadio Airport in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, next year to meet the sharp increase in air passengers to and from the province’s capital.
AP II president director Tri S. Sunoko said on Thursday in Jakarta that the new 32,000-square-meter terminal would be five times larger than the present terminal.
He said the expansion would increase the airport’s capacity to 3.2 million passengers a year from the current 875,000 passengers. The number of passengers using the terminal reached a total of 1.93 million between January and November, vastly exceeding the existing capacity.
The construction of the new terminal would be carried out in stages so that the construction work would not affect the operation of the airport, he added.
For the first phase, AP II will allocate Rp 65 billion (US$7.1 million). The total amount of funds required to complete the terminal is expected to reach Rp 390 billion.
“We are aiming to finish the terminal in 2014. Hopefully, by mid-2013, half of the terminal will be operational,” he said.
