AKARTA: A man was beaten by residents in Kebon Kelapa, Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, on Monday after being caught stealing Rp 10,000 (US$1.10) and an old Nokia 3315 phone.

According to Sutrisno, 67, the victim of the petty theft, the incident occurred around 2 p.m. in his house, Jl. Kebon Pala II. He said, “I fell asleep after cleaning my garden. I didn’t know somebody was breaking into my house until my neighbor told me. Afterward, we all chased him together.”

Local residents managed to catch the alleged thief, identified as Asep Suherman, about 500 meters from the crime scene and began to mob him.

A Kampung Melayu subdistrict officer arrived on the scene and took Asep into custody to protect him from the angry residents.
