Manga are comics created in Japan, or by Japanese creators in the Japanese language, conforming to a style developed in Japan in the late 19th century.

Manga has a broad range of genres: action-adventure; romance; sports and games; historical drama; comedy; science fiction and fantasy; mystery; horror; sexy and business/commerce.

Titles: Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Hai, Miiko!, Doraemon, Candy-candy, Kungfu Boy

American comics

The development of the modern American comic book happened in stages. Publishers had collected comic strips in hardcover book form as early as 1833, with The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck, which appeared in New York in 1842, as the first example published in English.

In the mid-to-late 1980s, two series published by DC Comics, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen, had a profound impact upon the American comic-book industry. Their popularity, along with mainstream media attention and critical acclaim, combined with changing social tastes, led to a considerably darker tone in comic books during the 1990s nicknamed by fans as the “grim-and-gritty” era.

Titles: SpiderMan, Fantastic Four, The Avengers (Marvel); Superman, The Flash, Batman, Catwoman

European comics

The roots of European comics can be found as early as 18th century caricatures and later with precursors in the form of illustrated picture books like Wilhelm Busch’ Max and Moritz. The early 19th century Swiss artist Rodolphe Töpffer is regarded by many as the “father of the modern comic” and his publication Histoire de M. Vieux Bois is sometimes called the first “comic book”. Franco-Belgian comics are historically among the dominant scenes of European comics.

Titles: The Adventures of Tintin and The Smurfs (Belgium) and Asterix (France)

Manhwa

Manhwa is the general Korean term for comics and print cartoons (common usage also includes animated cartoons). Outside of Korea, the term usually refers specifically to South Korean comics. The term, along with manga, is a cognate of the Chinese manhua. Manhwa were inspired by classic Asian arts, especially Chinese.

Manhwa has been influenced by the dramatic modern history of Korea, resulting in a diversity of forms and genres, including a mainstream style same as manga.

Titles: Who: Bill Gates, Crazy Girl Shin Bia, Goong Palace Story

Manhua

Manhua are Chinese comics originally produced in China. Hong Kong and Taiwan (Republic of China) have been the places of publication of most manhua thus far, often including Chinese translations of Japanese manga.

Modern Chinese-style manhua characteristics are credited to the breakthrough art work of the 1982’s Chinese Hero. It had innovative, realistic drawings with details resembling real people.

Titles: Long Hu Men, Ice Fantasy, The Lady of the Lake Mirror
