rcheologists from Yogyakarta Culture Agency have discovered structures and pottery fragments believed to date from the 17th century Mataram Kingdom at Kedaton, Bantul regency, Yogyakarta.
'This is the first evidence of whole structure covering the site,' Rully Andriadi, the leader of the excavation team, said on Monday.
The team has been excavating a 300-square-meter area among residents' houses since May 1. 'This is an expansion of the last dig in the area in 2009 to 2012,' Rully told The Jakarta Post.
At a depth of one meter, the team found foundations made of blocks 260 centimeters wide.
They suspected that the wall is part the Keraton (palace). Unfortunately excavation had to stop as it had reached a resident's house.
'I found the pottery pieces among the foundations,' Dian a team archeologist, said adding that they were thought to be items used in everyday life. The team also found ceramics which indicated that the Mataram Kingdom had connections with other nations.
All findings will be kept at the archaeological museum near the site in Kedaton. (nai)
