In Javanese, bajingan has two different meanings. First, it is an abusive word denoting a scoundrel or rogue frequently uttered as an expression of deep irritation toward somebody. Second, the word means an oxcart coachman.
A gathering of such bajingan or oxcart coachmen was recently held in Sleman regency, Yogyakarta. It was part of this year's Oxcart Festival, with around 200 oxcarts from Yogyakarta and Central Java participating in the event.
The traditional modes of transportation from a bygone era, which are now rarely used, were dusted off to mark the occasion and returned to the regency's highways.
Oxcart owners have mostly kept their ox-drawn vehicles in their barns and no longer use them as a means of conveyance. But some still collect these traditional vehicles as a hobby. In the past, those who were held in high esteem in their villages used to possess oxcarts.
