Oxcart Festival: Remembering the past

Tour de Yogya: About 200 oxcarts in a parade across Yogyakarta during the recent annual Oxcart Festival recently.

In Javanese, bajingan has two different meanings. First, it is an abusive word denoting a scoundrel or rogue frequently uttered as an expression of deep irritation toward somebody. Second, the word means an oxcart coachman.

A gathering of such bajingan or oxcart coachmen was recently held in Sleman regency, Yogyakarta. It was part of this year'€™s Oxcart Festival, with around 200 oxcarts from Yogyakarta and Central Java participating in the event.

The traditional modes of transportation from a bygone era, which are now rarely used, were dusted off to mark the occasion and returned to the regency'€™s highways.

Oxcart owners have mostly kept their ox-drawn vehicles in their barns and no longer use them as a means of conveyance. But some still collect these traditional vehicles as a hobby. In the past, those who were held in high esteem in their villages used to possess oxcarts.
