Pole dancer extraordinaire Vicky Burki
Indonesia Pole Dance Association (IDPA) founder Jun Ko Agus says that the practice can define a dancer's physique. 'It makes the body muscular and lean ' not the kind of big muscled that makes a woman look manly.'
'It is good to shape the arms, core, thighs ['¦] almost all parts of the body work and get the benefit of pole dancing,' Junko says.
Vicky Burki, Jun Ko's fellow teacher, agrees. 'The students here join pole-dance classes to have fun and be healthy. They want to do a unique kind of sport, a challenging one, unlike just running or training at the gym.'
'After an exhausting daily routine at the office or home, they want to be happy through pole dancing, thus they get healthy ' physically and mentally,' she adds.
According to Vicky, a former actress and aerobics start, anyone can learn. 'They don't have to possess dance skill or have experience in sports. As long as they are willing to learn, commit and be disciplined, they will be able to pole dance.'
Many of my students don't have any background in dancing or sports,' she says. 'But look at them now. They can.'
Age doesn't matter. Students at the IDPA's studio in Kemang, South Jakarta, run from single women in their mid-20s to a 50-year-old mom with two kids. Body size is also not a problem: Even students who are not slim can be seen scaling the pole on the dance floor.
The key is not to sweat your problems ' literally.
'When doing difficult movements, you need to be relaxed and stay calm,' Vicky says. The more we get stressed or afraid, the more sweaty we are. Sweat is dangerous as it can make you slip. Just be confident with your own body.'
For the curious, the IPDA holds regular pole drops, where you can learn how to scale a pole in a single visit. All that is needed is a relaxed mind-set, an eye for fun and some confidence.
