he Indonesian Broadcast Commission (KPI) has designated seven cartoon programs suitable for viewing by children. The programs are 'Dora the Explorer', 'Adit Sopo Jarwo', 'Laptop si Unyil' (Unyil's Laptop), 'Curious George', 'Thomas and Friends', 'Unyil Keliling Dunia' (Unyil Goes Around the World), and 'Disney Junior'.
'We appreciate the cartoons that are fitting in educational material and helping to support child development in the process,' KPI commissioner Agatha Lily said on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.
Agatha said the KPI had reprimanded several broadcasters for airing cartoons deemed unsuitable for small children. Those cartoons included 'Tom and Jerry', 'Bima Sakti' and 'Little Krishna', which the KPI said were harmful for child development.
The KPI also recommended that other cartoons be placed in a "red category," or "need parental guidance" category. Cartoons in this grouping included shows like "Spongebob Squarepants" and "Crayon Sinchan". (dyl)
