akarta: The East Jakarta Social Affairs Agency has detained a beggar, Putri Handayani, and her child, Neneng, in Cipinang Besar, confiscating Rp 5 million in cash (US$375) and gold jewelry that is estimated to be worth Rp 30 million.
Putri, a 46-year-old beggar from Sumedang in West Java, said that the amount of money and the jewelry were the hard-earned results of her six years of asking for money in several areas in Jakarta, such as Cipinang Baru, Pulogadung in East Jakarta and Cilincing in North Jakarta.
Putri and Neneng had been cashing in on Ramadhan, agency head Marjito said, during which people usually give more money to beggars.
Emphasizing that panhandling violated Bylaw No. 8/2007 on public order, Marjito asked the citizens not to hand money to beggars.
'Citizens are expected to also take part in public order by not giving money to them. It would be better to donate it to trusted institutions,' he said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Thursday evening.
The mother and daughter had been taken to social rehabilitation center Bangun Daya 2 in Cipayung, Jakarta Timur.
