A

seventh victim died in hospital on Sunday following the eruption of Mount Sinabung, North Sumatra, increasing the total number of deceased to seven people. A further two people remain in intensive care due to severe burns.

The latest victim, Ibrahim Sembiring, 51, died at Efarina Etaham Hospital while receiving treatment for severe burn injuries, North Sumatra Police spokesman Adj. Sr.Cmr. Rina Sari Ginting said on Sunday, Antara news agency reported.

Cahaya Sembiring, 75, and Cahaya Br Tarigan, 45, remain in intensive care.

The deceased were all residents of Gamber, Karo regency, listed as a red zone by local authorities as the village is located within five kilometers of the Mount Sinabung crater.

Mount Sinabung began spewing hot clouds on Saturday afternoon.

Despite government's prohibition not enter the village due to the dangerous volcanic activities of Mount Sinabung, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said that the villagers had been working on their farms at the location when the eruption took place at 4:48 p.m. on Saturday and had been injured by the spewing hot clouds.
