akarta should build special lanes for premium buses, which could become a preferred option for upper-income people instead of using private vehicles, a transportation expert has said.
Institute of Transportation Studies (Instran) expert Achmad Izzul Waro said wealthy people in Jakarta tended to drive their own vehicles or use ride-hailing applications rather than taking public transportation.
However, he believed they may use premium congestion-free Transjakarta buses if such a service existed as the upper-income people would only take public transportation with prime services.
“The main problem would be the infrastructure. The city administration would have to build overtaking lanes that allowed the premium buses to overtake regular buses, as the premium ones would only stop at prioritized bus stops,” Izzul said on Thursday.
Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama recently mentioned the importance of keeping dedicated Transjakarta lanes clear of trespassing private cars and motorcycles, saying it was also crucial to have emergency routes available for ambulances and fire trucks.
Worsened traffic in normal lanes amid the improved flow of Transjakarta buses would encourage commuters to leave behind their private vehicles and use public transportation instead, he said. (vps/ags)
