he House of Representatives will not revoke its ban on State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Minister Rini Soemarno from attending any hearings at the House, a lawmaker has said.

Deputy chairman of House Commission IV overseeing agriculture, food, forestry, plantations and fisheries and maritime affairs Dody Reza Alex Noerdin asked President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to definitively appoint an official to represent Rini at hearings in the House in the future.

“Yesterday, President Jokowi told Finance Minister [Bambang Brodjonegoro] to represent the SOE minister to discuss the budget, but that hearing was only limited to budgetary talks. In the future, we have to exert our control over this ministry, and that will be difficult,” Dody said as quoted by kompas.com on Friday.

Dody insisted that replacing Rini with other ministers would not be effective since the House needed a senior official from the SOE Ministry itself to represent Rini to be able to discuss matters related to the ministry in depth and comprehensively.

The House’s plenary meeting on Dec. 18, 2015 decided to ban Rini from any hearing with lawmakers after the House’s special committee of inquiry alleged fraud had plagued state seaport operator Pelindo II. The same committee also recommended the dismissal of Rini on the grounds of her responsibility for the alleged corruption. (dmr)
