Gerindra declared its support for Bobby’s candidacy on Monday, the same day he announced he had joined the party.
edan Mayor Bobby Nasution, who is also President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s son-in-law, has announced plans to run for governor of North Sumatra on a Gerindra Party ticket.
The party declared its support for Bobby’s candidacy on Monday, the same day he announced he had joined Gerindra.
Bobby said he had asked for Jokowi’s blessing to join the party and run in the race.
“As my parent, of course I have to ask his permission before joining Gerindra,” he said on Monday evening. “Now that I’m officially a Gerindra member, I will work closely with the party [to win the election].”
Bobby’s announcement ends months of speculation about his political future, after the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) dismissed him in November of last year.
He was kicked out of the party after declaring his support for presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, who ran alongside Jokowi’s eldest son and Bobby’s brother-in-law Gibran Rakabuming Raka on Gerindra’s ticket.
