undreds of ride-hailing mobile application drivers held a demonstration on Wednesday to protest recent police operations targeting them and the transportation ministerial regulation that underpins them.
The drivers of online taxi operators like Go Car, Uber and Crab Car gathered in front of a shopping mall in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, displaying banners to oppose the government regulation. They planned to move to the State Palace and House of Representatives building.
“The ministerial regulation has disrupted our operation. It should be revoked,” said Online Car Community field coordinator Endang Joni Setiawan as reported by kompas.com, referring to Transportation Ministerial Regulation No. 32/2016 on taxi operation.
Under the regulation, app-based taxi service providers are required to form a legal entity in Indonesia, as well as facilitate their transportation business partners' permits for providing a taxi service, while their cars are also required to undergo regular roadworthy tests like other public transportation vehicles.
Since the regulation came into effect in May, less than 1,600 cars have undergone roadworthy tests, from a total of more than 5,000 online cars.
Meanwhile, the community’s advocacy coordinator Adriawal Simanjuntak said that some 1,000 drivers would take part in the demonstration. He said that participants from Tangerang and Bogor were on their way to Jakarta. (bbn)
