During the campaign event with running mate Muhaimin Iskandar, presidential candidate Anies Baswedan promised to protect the rights of ride-hailing drivers in Indonesia through various programs.
Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan said the state should guarantee online ride-hailing drivers’ rights and protection as workers, criticizing the Job Creation Law which classified ride-hailing drivers solely as partners.
“We must emphasize that ride-hailing drivers are workers. Although the [jobs] law refers to them as workers outside of an employment relationship, they are mainly regarded as partners. I also think it is not appropriate," said Anies at a campaign event with running mate Muhaimin Iskandar in Jakarta, on Monday, as quoted by Antara.
During the event, Anies expressed his respect for the drivers who had come without receiving compensation for transportation.
Looking at the practice of online ride-hailing drivers in several other countries, Anies said companies making their driver partners employees resulted in cost increases.
This approach could eventually lead to the drivers leaving the business, harming both the drivers and the company.
The former Jakarta governor emphasized that the country must work hand-in-hand with workers to formulate an employment scheme between ride-hailing applications and drivers.
He also stressed that the state must provide social security and health insurance for all workers in the online ride-hailing industry.
