T Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) plans to operate more than 300 large and more luxurious Scania buses by April next year to accommodate more passengers and improve the company’s service, said Transjakarta president director Budi Kaliwono at City Hall on Friday.
In November, about 100 13.5-meter long buses will start serving passengers, Budi said.
“We want to create a new Jakarta with better transportation so we can catch up with big cities across the world. The operation of larger buses will help Jakarta become a more modern city,” Budi said, adding that every day the company carried out regular checks on bus roadworthiness and impounded poor-quality buses.
Each of the new larger buses costs Rp 2.5 billion (US$188,532). The seating in the buses will be fully upholstered.
“With higher-specification buses, Transjakarta is aiming to attract 15 million passengers [per month]. In August, Transjakarta buses transported 11.6 million passengers.
Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said with the improvement of the bus interiors, Transjakarta buses would be like tourism buses. “The buses will look more luxurious. We will also arrange panels in the buses for advertisements so we will get income from them,” Ahok said. (bbn)
