P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has inaugurated New Priok Container Terminal 1, or the Kalibaru Container Terminal in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Tuesday.

With the new terminal, which has been operated commercially since Aug. 18, container capacity at Tanjung Priok has increased by 1.5 million twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year.

During the inauguration ceremony, Jokowi stressed that modern port development was to strengthen connectivity and  sustain the flow of trade and investment to the country.

"Don't wait, don't slow down. If Pelindo II is financially incapable, please invite private sectors. Competition is already in front of us. If we’re late, we’re going to be left behind. All construction must be completed in 2019," Jokowi said.

The terminal is operated by PT New Priok Container Terminal One (NPCT1). A joint venture between state-owned port operator Pelindo II with Mitsui & Co, Ltd. (Mitsui), PSA International Pte Ltd. (PSA) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line).

Pelindo II president director Elvyn G. Masassya said Kalibaru terminal was built to gradually step up the capacity in Tanjung Priok, in anticipation of container and cargo traffic growth in the port. By terminal configuration, additional equipment and arrangement, container capacity, which stood at only 5 million TEUs per year in 2010, is expected to increase to 7 million TEUs per year. In 2019, total capacity of Tanjung Priok is expected to reach 11.5 million TEUs per year after the entire Kalibaru Terminal is completed. (evi)
