resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has ordered immediate action from the Social Affairs Ministry and the Health Ministry in response to floods and landslides that claimed many lives in the West Java regencies of Garut and Sumedang.
Presidential Spokesman Johan Budi conveyed the President’s condolences over the casualties and said the President had been briefed on the victims and the areas affected.
"He immediately instructed the social affairs minister and the health minister to handle the situation as soon as possible and take necessary measures to deal with the landslides," Johan Budi said at the State Palace on Wednesday.
With regard to public facilities damaged by the catastrophe, Johan said the President had also instructed the public works and public housing minister to fix damaged roads.
Following heavy rainfall on Tuesday, a flash flood struck Bayongbong, Karangpawitan, Garut regency, at 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning, killing at least 23 people. In Cimareme village, Sumedang regency, landslides buried two houses on Tuesday evening. (bbn)
