gainst the backdrop of alleged irregularities having occurred in rector elections of several universities, transparent processes and tight supervision will become keys in ensuring a clean and accountable rector electoral system, an education observer has said.
Senior member of the National Commission on Education (Komnas Pendidikan) Andreas Tambah argued that the lack of supervision from independent bodies had led to these practices flourishing.
"Involving independent bodies, such as the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), in monitoring elections is the right thing to do. It sends a message to the candidates that corrupt practices have no place [in rector elections]," he said on Monday.
He added that candidates should be prohibited from establishing campaign teams. "Hiring them will require money. Besides, it's also possible that members of the campaign team will demand something in return once [the candidate is] elected, which may affect future policy creation," he said.
Meanwhile, University of Indonesia (UI) spokesperson Rifelly Dewi Astuti said her university had adhered to transparent processes in rector elections. "We assure the election committee is accountable because it comprises representatives from many elements, including students, lecturers and the general public," she said.
"We even make the candidate's debate openly for the public, which is accessible on our website," she said, adding that candidates were required to submit their financial reports beforehand.
The Indonesian Ombudsman recently reported that rector elections in seven universities in Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi allegedly contained irregularities. (fac/bbn)
