T

he construction of a long-awaited intermediate treatment Facility (ITF) for garbage will begin this year in Sunter, North Jakarta, an official has said.

Jakarta Environment Agency deputy head Ali Maulana Hakim said Tuesday that the agency had raised local people’s awareness about the plan to build the facility, which is expected to process up to 2,000 tons of waste per day and convert it into energy.

“God willing, a plant with a capacity of 2,000 tons of waste per day will be started this year,” he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.

He added that the city administration was also still trying to reduce the 7,000 cubic meters of waste produced by Jakarta residents every day.

Construction of the ITF has been on the city administration’s agenda since 2011, with Sunter, Marunda, Cakung and Duri Kosambi proposed locations for the facility.

Tenders for the projects were received in 2012 and several foreign companies were selected to handle the project in cooperation with local companies.
