Police are working to arrest a group of local residents who allegedly attacked officers and damaged a police vehicle while freeing a drug suspect during a raid on Jl. Pelita V.
olice are on the hunt for 10 people for attacking officers and attempting to free a suspected drug dealer during a recent raid in Medan.
The alleged obstruction incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, when the Medan Police’s narcotics unit was in the middle of arresting the suspect, 35-year-old GP, acting on a tip about a drug dealer operating near an Army barracks on Jl. Pelita V in the North Sumatra capital.
After seizing two packages containing 0.5 grams of crystal methamphetamine, the officers had arrested the suspect and were escorting him to a police car for further interrogation at police headquarters when several local residents swarmed the vehicle.
The group protested GP’s arrest, and some allegedly attacked and damaged the police car.
“Some of the car windows were broken. They also dragged GP out of the car,” Medan Police chief Sr. Comr. Teddy Jhon Sahala Marbun said on Saturday.
As the situation heated up, the officers called for help from the nearby military facility as well as local officials to control the mob and recapture GP.
“We rearrested the suspect shortly after the incident,” Teddy said, and the police unit immediately left the scene.
