A

second landslide hit Banaran village in Ponorogo, East Java, on Sunday, just days after a previous one killed at least three people and displaced 200 others at the same location.

Search and rescue personnel trying to locate 25 missing villagers believed to be buried under 50 meters of mud after an April 1 landslide had to save themselves as the moving ground destroyed everything in its path.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said that while there were no casualties in the latest incident, the landslide on Sunday dragged away three excavators and buried one excavator and two cars of the volunteers. The landslide also destroyed two houses used by the rescue team and the cellular network.

On Friday, family members of the 25 missing people had urged the joint search and rescue team to continue its efforts.

“We should not stop the operation until they are all found,” Banaran village chief Sarnu said on Friday. The SAR team has scheduled the operation to conclude on April 15. (hol/wit)
