orth Jakarta recorded a sharp decline in the number of dengue cases this year as a result of mosquito eradication efforts, an official said on Wednesday.
The number of the cases had declined to 213 between January and April, compared to 472 in the same period last year, North Jakarta Health Agency head Muhammad Helmi said
He said the decrease was a result of the residents and municipality taking measures to tackle the disease, including clearing out mosquito nests in the area.
"We only raised public awareness of the 3M program," he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com, referring to a program that consists of burying used cans, draining water tanks and covering water reservoirs to avoid having standing stagnant water open to mosquito breeding.
The city administration also appreciated the work of mosquito larvae controllers, known locally as jumantik volunteers, who according to him had contributed greatly in fighting against dengue.
"To keep dengue case as low as possible, we ask locals to become jumantik volunteers," Muhammad continued.
