man charged with possessing illegal firearms escaped from Serang District Court in Banten after asking for permission to use the restroom following a hearing on Wednesday afternoon.
The defendant, Saiful bin Yusuf, 25, escaped after asking to use the restroom while being taken to custody at the Cilegon Prosecutor's Office. After realizing Saiful had escaped, local police officers and court officers rushed to find him, climbing the court's walls and sweeping through bushes around the complex.
Footage from CCTVs showed Saiful changed his clothes, into a grey and white T-shirt and red and black cap, before calmly leaving the complex.
Serang District Court head Sumartono said the T-shirt might have been given to him by his friend. “Or maybe he wore it over his [prisoner uniform],” he said on Wednesday as quoted by tempo.co.
Saiful had undergone trial for the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for violating the 1951 Emergency Law on the possession of illegal firearms. (wnd)
