days-long fire at the Rawa Kucing landfill in Tangerang, Banten, began to wane on Wednesday after local authorities enlisted the help of neighboring cities and regencies to put out the blaze.
Officials said most of the fire on the surface of the landfill had been extinguished as of Wednesday afternoon and that the Tangerang Transportation Agency has begun reopening streets near the landfill, such as Jl. Iskandar Muda, to allow public transportation vehicles to pass through.
The traffic authority had previously closed off some roads surrounding the landfill, limiting access to fire engines and other emergency vehicles.
“We reopened the street to prevent any traffic congestion, considering the number of vehicles and the needs of residents in the surrounding areas,” Tangerang Transportation Agency head Achmad Suhaely said on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara.
He added that only certain vehicles, such as angkot (public minivans), would be allowed to travel near the landfill and noted that the roads could be closed again if the situation worsened.
The fire at Rawa Kucing broke out on Friday and burned largely unabated until Tuesday morning, local media reported.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, which was fanned by strong winds and fueled by the landfill’s vast pile of flammable waste.
