our evictees from Kampung Aquarium in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, passed away over the last three weeks due to severe illnesses at their dormitories.
The four victims are Anton, 45, and Untung, 53, both of whom died of hypertension, Eka Juanti, 22, who passed away due potassium deficiency, and Supina, 49, who died because of a lung disease.
One resident living at one of the dormitories, Dharmadiyani, said on Thursday that many of the evictees had undergone medical check-ups and the results revealed that most of them suffered from hypertension.
"Before the eviction, these things had never happened," she said as quoted by tempo.co.
Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama ordered the forced eviction of hundreds of houses at Kampung Aquarium on April 11 last year in order to revitalize the poor fishermen's neighborhood.
The city administration prepared several low-cost apartments in Marunda, North Jakarta, and Rawa Bebek, East Jakarta, for the 596 evicted families, but about 160 of them refused to move to the apartments because the locations were too far away from where they worked, and instead built four big tents and 132 dormitories atop the debris of their former houses.
Some political parties reportedly helped erect the tents and dormitories prior to the Jakarta gubernatorial election in February. (Vny)
