resident Joko “Jokowi” took time from his working visit in East Java to attended on Wednesday the inauguration of Indonesia Ulema Council (MUI) chairman Ma’ruf Amin as a professor in sharia economy and muamalat at Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University in Malang.
Also in attendance were several ministers, including Culture and Education Minister Muhammad Nasir, Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa and State Secretary Pratikno.
Nasir lauded Ma’ruf as a good example of someone who excelled in both faith and academics, adding that the latter’s role in sharia economics will be highly appreciated.
“A lot of his fatwas on Islamic economy have been used as the reference in the country and across the globe,” he said in a press statement on Wednesday.
For his inauguration speech, Ma’ruf read his scientific study entitled “Makharij Fiqhiyyah [Islamic Law Solution] as a Boost for the New Era of Sharia Economy in Indonesia.” (hol/rin)
