he Jakarta administration has prohibited residents from carrying out sahur on the road (SOTR) events, in which predawn meals are distributed to the needy during the fasting month of Ramadhan amid heightened security and public order concerns.
“We are banning sahur on the road. If you want to have sahur, just do it at mosques or at home. Don’t do it on street because it will cause more mudharat [harm],” Djarot was quoted by Kompas.com as saying on Friday.
Djarot said that people attending sahur on the road events often caused a public nuisance, adding that some travelled in motorcycle convoys without bringing a driver's license.
The administration will coordinate with the Jakarta Police to enforce the ban, Djarot said.
Meanwhile, Jakarta Police deputy chief. Brig. Gen. Suntana agreed with Djarot, advising residents not to join SOTR events as for the last three years such activities often ended in brawls. (cal/dmr)
