T

he Jakarta administration has cleared semi-permanent dwellings built underneath the toll road over Kalijodo park, North Jakarta, with the assistance from police and military personnel.

The demolition, which was conducted on Wednesday morning, did not face resistance from squatters, who voluntarily tore down their own makeshift homes.

One of the squatters, Tunyatin, had been living under the toll road for the past two months and started tearing down her home on Tuesday after hearing news of the clearing.

"I have been taking down the house since yesterday, together with [my husband]. We will move," Tunyatin said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.

Two bulldozers were on standby to help the squatters to tear down the buildings.

Previously, North Jakarta Police raided the dwellings and seized weapons, bottles of liquor and condoms.

Over the past few weeks, dozens of people have started building semi-permanent dwellings under the toll road. The buildings were reportedly used for prostitution.

Kalijodo is a former red-light district that was demolished under the leadership of then-governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama in February last year.

The administration transformed the neighborhood into a child-friendly integrated public space (RPTRA). (cal)
