At least 170 families in Beras Jahe district in Karo regency, North Sumatra, have been forced to abandon their houses in Pertumbuken village after a hail storm hit the village on Monday evening.
Most of their houses’ roofs were damaged in the violent storm, which lasted about an hour.
Sopian Barus, 50, said he had to relocate to a shelter because there was no roof left on his house.
“Everything was destroyed in minutes. Our farm was also heavily damaged,” he told The Jakarta Post in Pertumbuken village on Tuesday.
“We were all surprised, the storm and downpour came at the same time, carrying ice the size of marbles,” he added.
The secretary of Barus Jahe district, Daud Sembiring, said total losses caused by the storm could reach hundreds of millions of rupiah.
He said three villages had been affected, namely Pertumbuken, Bulan Julu and Serdang. “Pertumbukan is the most affected,” he said.
At least 315 hectares of farmland were also affected, he added.
