outh Tangerang Police have reportedly shot four suspected robbers who were caught stealing goods from an Indomaret convenience store in Pamulang, South Tangerang, Banten on Wednesday morning, killing one and wounding others.

The police had been patrolling the surrounding area and caught the suspects stealing boxes of milk, cigarettes and other goods from the store at 4 a.m. in the morning.

South Tangerang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr Fadli Widianto said the police had fired warning shots twice, but the robbers tried to resist by using sharp weapons.

"The four suspects were dealt with firmly because they tried to resist by using sharp weapons," Fadli said in a statement.

The police said they were still collecting evidence and estimated the robbery would have inflicted Rp 50 million (US$3,691.50) in material losses. "The evidence includes around 230 branded beverages, hundreds of bottles of drinking water, a crowbar to force the shop door open and sharp weapons," Fadli said. 

A suspect, identified as Jonni Hutahean, was shot dead by the police. His body was taken to Kramat Jati Police Hospital, East Jakarta. Two other suspects were shot in the neck and thigh respectively, while one tried to escape but was apprehended on a rooftop of a nearby residence.  

The police alleged that the group of robbers, who are suspected to be part of a criminal network, had committed crimes in the Tangerang area 13 times this year.

The police also found that the suspects had cut the power supply of the CCTV equipment and seized its hard drive. (dis)
