bridge connecting the regencies of Lamongan and Tuban in East Java and an overpass under construction in North Sulawesi collapsed on Tuesday, adding to the list of construction failures in Indonesia.
The Babat-Widang Bridge came down on Tuesday morning, killing at least two people and injuring one. Three trucks and a motorcycle fell into the Bengawan Solo River below the bridge, kompas.com reported.
Bojonegoro Police traffic chief Adj. Comr. Aristianto Budi called on road users to make a detour.
“One lane of the bridge can still be used, but due to heavy traffic it’s probably better to take another route, via Bojonegoro,” he said.
Meanwhile, an under-construction overpass over the Manado-Bitung toll road—which is also under construction—collapsed on Tuesday afternoon. The overpass was intended as an alternative for road users while the toll road is being built.
Puspita Anggraeni, the corporate secretary of state-owned construction firm PT Wijaya Karya—the project contractor, said the workers were casting concrete when one of the slabs collapsed, kontan.co.id reported. As many as 21 workers have been evacuated from the site.
In February, a girder pole on the Bekasi-Cawang-Kampung Melayu (Becakayu) toll road near the Kebon Nanas toll gate in East Jakarta collapsed, injuring at least seven people. In the same month, a retaining wall at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport collapsed, killing one person in a passing car. (swd)
