he city administration has issued a gubernatorial decree on the extended odd-even license plate policy, which will officially take effect on Wednesday, according to Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno, who claimed to have signed it along with Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on Tuesday.
"We've signed it, everything checks out," Sandiaga said as quoted by tempo.co.
The decree laid out the details of the traffic policy, including penalties, he added.
Traffic police have already begun fining motorists caught violating the rule, even though the administration had yet to make it official.
The police needed legal justification to incur penalties on violators, according to the Jakarta Police's traffic unit deputy head, Sr. Comr. Nurhandono.
"We cannot incur penalties on violators without the decree," he said.
A trial period for the extended odd-even policy started on July 2 with the aim of curbing traffic during the upcoming Asian Games, which will run from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2.
The previous regulation only applied to Jl. Sudirman and Jl. MH Thamrin during morning and evening rush hour.
It has been extended to cover Jl. S Parman in West Jakarta, Jl. Gatot Subroto, Jl. HR Rasuna Said and Jl. Arteri Pondok Indah in South Jakarta, as well as Jl. DI Pandjaitan, Jl. Ahmad Yani and Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan in East Jakarta.
In Central Jakarta, the rule affects Jl. Benyamin Sueb in Kemayoran. (rfa)
