akarta Transportation Agency deputy head Sigit Wijatmoko says the weekly Car Free Day event will continue even during the Asian Para Games slated for Oct. 8 to 16.
The announcement came after residents were caught unawares when Car Free Day was canceled on Aug. 26 to accommodate an Asian Games marathon.
“Car Free Day actually went on during the Asian Games except on the day of the marathon,” he said on Sunday as reported by kompas.com.
Sigit insisted that road closures were necessary to ensure the smooth running of the marathon.
“However, there will be no marathon for the Para Games, so Car Free Day will not be affected,” he assured.
Car Free Day in the capital has been a regular event since 2007. The city administration at first held it three times a year before it became a weekly event in 2012 along Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Sudirman from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
