everal neighborhoods in Kampung Rambutan, East Jakarta, were inundated by 80-centimeter-deep floodwaters due to heavy rain on Tuesday and overflow from the Cipinang River.
Vehicles were not able to pass the areas and local residents had to use emergency rafts provided by the Kampung Rambutan administration, which were navigated by workers from Jakarta's Public Facility Maintenance Agency (PPSU), kompas.com reported.
“The flood occurred at around 3 p.m., when heavy rain hit the area. In addition, the river overflowed,” said Hanifah, a local resident.
Hanifah said that while floods in the area usually did not last long, they happened frequently during heavy rains that caused the Cipinang River to burst its banks.
Meanwhile, Kampung Rambutan subdistrict head Dwi Widyastuti said that flooding in some neighborhoods had hampered the mobility of the local residents.
"The most affected area is on Jl. Laning in RT [neighborhood unit] 012, RT 004 and RW [community unit] 003. This is because of the excess water from the Cipinang River, due to high precipitation," said Dwi. (mai)
