A housing complex in Depok, West Java, was inundated on Wednesday after sheet piles along the banks of the Jantung River collapsed.
The collapse of 20-meter-high and 100-m-long sheet piles also caused a landslide along the riverbank and damage to a house in the Tirta Mandala housing complex.
Sukamaju subdistrict head Nurhadi said the area was 60 centimeters deep in floodwater as a result.
“Less water also infiltrates [the ground] due to the development of houses near the river,” he said as reported by kompas.com.
Nurhadi said a permit for the housing complex was in the process of being acquired.
He said he would communicate with the Public Works and Housing Ministry about the collapsed sheet piling.
“We will ask the ministry to deploy heavy equipment and reinstall the sheet piles,” he added.
