The sound of gamelan was heard at Hub Hall in Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, during a gamelan concert jointly held by the Indonesian Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand School of Music, and Gamelan Wellington on March 22.

The concert, titled “Night HUB: Gamelan and Indonesian Dance”, which also featured Indonesian traditional dance performances, was held a week after devastating mosque attacks that killed 50 people, including one Indonesian national, in Christchurch.

The event began with a minute of silence and prayer led by Agam Jaya of Al-Ameen Islamic Center in Wellington to honor the victims. Later, the event proceeded with an umbul donga dance performance, a collaborative project created by Budi S. Putra of Gamelan Padhang Moncar and Sri Mulyani of the Sanggar Mulyojoyo Surabaya dance company.

Hundreds of spectators, consisting of college students and staff of Victoria University of Wellington, enjoyed the gamelan concert that combined Javanese and Balinese gamelan, according to the Indonesian Embassy in Wellington.

The embassy’s minister counsellor, Adek Triana Yudhaswari, who attended the concert to represent Indonesian Ambassador to New Zealand Tantowi Yahya, expressed her appreciation to the New Zealand School of Music and Gamelan Wellington for promoting Indonesian culture.

Gamelan Wellington has performed at various cultural events in New Zealand, including at the World Music and Dance in New Plymouth and school workshops. The ensemble was also involved in the score for the fantasy movie The Hobbit.
